I am a former chalk artist and created over 40 paintings on sidewalk and asphalt. I produced my first street painting at the Rotary Club of Orlando 's Street Painting Chalk Art Festival, Downtown Orlando.
Artists paint a large area on the sidewalk with pastels. I make a grid of my picture on the paper image that I want to paint. I grid the sidewalk as I did on my paper but in larger proportions. I then draw the picture on the sidewalk and paint with my pastels. I use hairspray to help the chalk adhere to the cement. This does not make your painting permanent but helps adhere the pastels on windy days. My cement canvas areas have varied from 4'x4' to 10'x12'. I have painted over 30 street paintings at various festivals.
This is temporary artwork; it washes off with water. I have been asked why do I spend so much time on the chalk paintings just to get washed away. Let’s face it; you can’t sell it….I tried. {LOL}
It is because I loved the challenge to create a large painting in a short period of time and I enjoyed the smiles of the audience. I have street painted in various locations in Florida.
I am a former member of the FLORIDA CHALK ARTISTS ASSOCIATION:
